Oculoplastic Surgery

The word “plastic” is derived from a Greek word that means to "mold or to give form". Plastic surgery is surgery that reshapes or reconstructs the human body. Oculoplastic Surgery, which is a surgical subspecialty of 'Ophthalmology' is plastic surgery that pertains around the eye, including a wide variety of surgical procedures that deal with brows, eyelids, tear ducts,  orbit (eye socket) and upper face.
As mentioned above, 'Oculoplastic Surgery'  is a surgical subspecialty of Ophthalmology. All territory of oculoplastic surgery (brows, eyelids, lacrymal system, orbit and other structures around eye) is closely and essentially related to eye itself. Moreover, the anatomy and physiology of structures around the eye are very delicate and complex. So, a good knowledge and experience about periocular tissues is essential in the management of disorders..  It is well known that any disorder of region and, consequently, any surgical attempt on these structures can affect the eye itself and its visual function.
Certainly, same is valid for 'Aesthetical or Cosmetical' surgery of  the region which may interfere with eye and visual functions frequently.
An Oculoplastic Surgeon is an ophthalmic surgeon who has completed additional training in plastic surgery of the region. Hence, an oculoplastic surgeon originated from ophthalmologist will, of course, approch the region more consciously and cope with any setbacks more professionnaly.
The oculoplastic surgeons may interact with other specialists (ENT surgeons, Neurosurgeons) who work on adjacent or related structures to eye.
